Carl E. Cheeseman Jr., 30, of Vineland, was driving westbound on Route 40 near Rosemont Avenue and Harding Avenue in Newfield about 11 p.m. when police think he swerved to avoid a deer. His SUV entered the eastbound lane striking the truck, which was driven by a 28-year-old Vineland man, according to Franklin Township Police.

Cheeseman was pronounced dead at the scene of the collision, police said. The truck driver remained at the scene and cooperated with patrol officers, they said. He was not hurt.

No charges have been filed, but the accident remains under investigation.

Route 40 was shut down for hours to clean up a large diesel fuel spill from the truck.
